Commedia Guide Book

An Illustrated Guide to the Movement of the Commedia dell’Arte

Published by Learning Through Theatre

This e-book is a resource for teachers, directors and performers that provides a form of sketched notation for the movement repertoires and character interplay. Commedia dell’Arte is a highly physical performance style and through adopting the body shape and movement patterns of the characters, much information about the personality can be discerned. It is not enough to wear a mask on your face: a complete physical transformation needs to take place before the character comes to life for an audience and this guide will show you how this can be achieved.

When teaching Commedia dell’Arte, I have find one of the challenges commonly faced by participants is remembering the different movements and mannerisms for each character. Being a visual thinker, I developed a simple sketched notation that I could draw onto a white board to aid the students as I teach. This movement guide pulls together all these sketches into, what I hope, is a useful reference guide when for others learning or teaching the form. Once the moves are embedded, the body starts to remember them, so that the mind can be freed to play and react to the narrative.
