Devising Commedia
A methodology for taking characters into performance.
An ideal follow on from the Introduction to Commedia workshop, this intensive practical workshop expands knowledge of the character behaviour and relationships to teach a method for creating comic scenarios through improvisation and devising.
Pre-requisite knowledge of the characters and movement is required. This workshop can be delivered in conjunction with Introduction to Commedia as a full day intensive.

Level and Duration:
KS3 to Degree level
3-6 hours
Not available as an online workshop
Participants will learn:
Deepened exploration of partnerships between characters exploring rhythms, energy, pace and emotions,
A range of comic techniques, slapstick routines, traditional lazzi (comic gags) and meccanismi (comic routines),
Stage mechanics: use of space, maintaining stage energy, pace, focus and tension,
A devising framework for mask work and Commedia that can be transferred to other comic devising.
Initially, comic interactions will be improvised to develop specific techniques for comedy and then we will move into devising short scenarios from canovacci (plot outlines). We will introduce plot lines common to the Commedia and will explore a transferable devising methodology that allows for playful exploration of taking the masks into performance.
Rehearsal, performance, feedback and refinement are encouraged throughout enabling students to develop greater insight into the performance demands and the actor-audience relationship, as well as developing a command of subject specific language, helping them to translate their learning into their writing. Performances will usually be to the rest of the group.
