DOM_0076.JPG

Following on from the Introduction to Commedia workshop, this intensive practical workshop expands knowledge of the movement, behaviour and relationships of the Commedia dell’Arte stock characters, taking them into performance with comic scenarios.

Pre-requisite knowledge of the characters and movement is required. This workshop can be delivered in conjunction with Introduction to Commedia as a full day intensive.

Participants will learn:

  • Further skills for mask work and Commedia

  • Deepened knowledge of the movement and mannerisms for the stock characters, underpinned with historical context

  • Deepened exploration of partnerships between characters and the on stage mechanics, looking at rhythms, energy, pace and emotions

  • A range of comic techniques, slapstick routines, traditional lazzi (comic gags) and meccanismi (comic routines)

  • Stage awareness and skills for devising a comic scene

Comic scenes will be improvised in small groups around a given scenario, enabling students to perform in the masks*, develop understanding of how to play comic gags and gain a deeper understanding of the relationships and plot lines common to the Commedia. Rehearsal, critique and refinement are encouraged throughout enabling students to develop greater insight and understanding of the complexity of the form and ability to translate experience into writing. Performances will usually be to the rest of the group.
